Engines that operate through internal combustion rely on large amounts of clean air to ensure the fuel burns properly and generates the power needed to drive the vehicle. At Strathfield Motors in Strathalbyn, we understand how vital it is to keep your car's air filter in good condition as part of protecting your engine's health. Your engine requires extremely clean air to function efficiently. Dirt, dust, and other particles entering the engine can cause serious damage. That’s where the air filter comes into play. It ensures the air entering the combustion chambers is clean, shielding key engine components such as the pistons and cylinders from wear and damage. Why Replace Your Air Filter? Save on Fuel Costs: Your engine requires the correct balance of fuel and air to run efficiently. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, causing your engine to run inefficiently – often referred to as ‘running rich.’ This not only puts additional stress on your engine but can also increase fuel consumption by up to 10%. No one likes spending more on petrol than necessary! Protect Your Engine: Over time, air filters become clogged and weaker, increasing the risk of damage. A damaged or overly dirty air filter can allow harmful particles to enter the engine, potentially leading to expensive repairs. Benefits of Replacing Your Air Filter: Extends the life of your engine Improves fuel efficiency Reduces vehicle emissions At Strathfield Motors, we always check the condition of your air filter during every full car service. Whether it’s a major or minor service, or one that follows your manufacturer’s handbook or logbook guidelines, you can trust us to keep your engine running smoothly.

Keep your engine healthy with clean air filters. Improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and extend engine life. Visit Strathfield Motors for expert maintenance and reliable car servicing.

Why You Might Be Using More Fuel Than Usual... If your vehicle suddenly seems to be using more fuel than normal, you’re not imagining it. Modern cars are more efficient than ever before, but they’re also far more sensitive to maintenance issues, driving conditions and neglected servicing. Even small faults can have a surprisingly large impact on fuel consumption. At first, many drivers assume rising fuel usage is simply due to fuel prices or traffic conditions. In reality, poor fuel economy is often your vehicle’s way of warning that something isn’t operating as efficiently as it should. Hidden Causes Of Poor Fuel Economy One of the most common causes is tyre pressure. Underinflated tyres create additional rolling resistance, forcing the engine to work harder every kilometre you drive. Even slightly low tyre pressures can noticeably increase fuel consumption over time, particularly during highway driving. Wheel alignment problems can also create drag that quietly wastes fuel while accelerating tyre wear. Modern EFI and engine management systems are another major factor. Today’s vehicles rely heavily on sensors to precisely balance fuel delivery. When these components become dirty, worn or inaccurate, the engine can begin running rich and using far more fuel than necessary without obvious symptoms. Dirty injectors, carbon build-up and neglected air filters can all contribute to reduced combustion efficiency and sluggish performance. Air conditioning can also affect fuel economy more than many drivers realise. This is especially true in Australia where hotter weather often means extended air conditioning use. Smaller engines generally feel the impact most because the compressor places additional load on the engine. In vehicles already struggling with servicing issues or cooling system inefficiencies, heavy air conditioning use can noticeably increase fuel consumption Driving habits remain one of the biggest influences on fuel economy. Rapid acceleration, heavy braking and excessive highway speeds all force the engine to consume more fuel. Smoother driving habits and maintaining a steady speed can make a significant difference in both city and highway conditions. Vehicle weight and aerodynamics also matter. Roof racks, toolboxes, camping gear, bull bars and towing setups all increase engine workload. Larger tyres and heavy accessories may improve capability or appearance, but they often come with a noticeable fuel penalty. This is especially relevant for 4WDs, utes and towing vehicles commonly used throughout regional Australia. Poor servicing habits are another major contributor. Old engine oil creates internal friction, dirty filters restrict airflow and neglected spark plugs reduce combustion efficiency. Many drivers don’t notice the gradual decline because fuel economy usually worsens slowly over time rather than all at once. Regular servicing helps identify these problems before they become expensive repairs or serious drivability issues. Cooling system condition is often overlooked too. If an engine struggles to maintain proper operating temperature, fuel efficiency can suffer significantly. Modern vehicles are designed to operate within a very specific temperature range, and cooling system faults can affect everything from performance to emissions and fuel usage. It’s also important to understand that official fuel economy figures are rarely identical to real-world driving results. Driving style, traffic, terrain, accessories and servicing condition all influence the final result. Many Australian drivers discover their actual fuel usage differs substantially from advertised figures once the vehicle is driven in normal day-to-day conditions. What Can You Do About Poor Fuel Economy? The good news is that most fuel economy problems can be improved with proper maintenance and diagnostics. Regular servicing, tyre checks, wheel alignments, injector cleaning, cooling system maintenance and air conditioning inspections all help modern vehicles operate more efficiently. At Strathfield Motors in Strathalbyn, we help drivers identify the hidden causes of poor fuel economy before they become larger mechanical problems. Whether your vehicle feels sluggish, your fuel bills are climbing or your car simply isn’t performing like it used to, a professional inspection can often restore both performance and efficiency. If your car is suddenly using more fuel than usual, it’s often worth investigating sooner rather than later. In many cases, catching the problem early can save far more money than simply continuing to pay for extra fuel every week. Bring your vehicle into Strathfield Motors in Strathalbyn for regular servicing to address many of these issues. If you are concerned about excess fuel usage ask our mechanics for advice on how to address it...

The Complete Guide to Logbook Servicing in Strathalbyn For many vehicle owners, keeping a car in top condition while protecting the manufacturer’s warranty is a top priority. One of the most important ways to achieve this is through logbook servicing. Yet many drivers in Strathalbyn are still unsure about how logbook servicing works, whether independent mechanics can perform it, and how it affects their vehicle warranty. This guide explains everything Strathalbyn motorists need to know about logbook servicing — what it includes, why it matters, and how choosing a trusted local workshop can save money while maintaining your vehicle’s value and reliability. What Is Logbook Servicing? Logbook servicing is a scheduled maintenance program set by your vehicle manufacturer. Every new vehicle comes with a service logbook that outlines exactly what maintenance tasks must be performed at specific time or kilometre intervals. Depending on the vehicle manufacturer, these services may occur every: 10,000 km 15,000 km 6 months 12 months Each service includes specific inspections, adjustments, and parts replacements designed to keep the vehicle operating safely and efficiently. Typical logbook service tasks may include: Engine oil and oil filter replacement Brake inspection and adjustment Checking suspension and steering components Battery testing Fluid level checks (coolant, transmission, brake fluid) Tyre inspection and rotation Safety checks on lights, belts, and hoses Once the service is completed, the mechanic stamps and signs the logbook to confirm that the work meets the manufacturer’s service requirements. Can an Independent Mechanic Perform Logbook Servicing? Yes — and this is one of the biggest misconceptions among vehicle owners. Under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010, Australian motorists are not required to service their vehicle at a dealership to maintain the manufacturer’s warranty. This means a qualified independent mechanic can perform logbook servicing as long as: The service follows the manufacturer’s specifications Approved parts and fluids are used Proper records are kept in the logbook For many Strathalbyn drivers, this allows them to support trusted local workshops instead of travelling to city dealerships. Why Logbook Servicing Is Important 1. Protects Your Vehicle Warranty
Manufacturers require scheduled maintenance to ensure the vehicle remains in proper condition. Missing services or failing to follow the service schedule can potentially affect warranty claims. Keeping your logbook updated provides clear proof that the vehicle has been properly maintained. 2. Improves Safety on the Road
Regular servicing ensures important safety systems are functioning properly. Catching these issues early helps prevent breakdowns and costly repairs later. Logbook services often identify issues such as: Brake wear Suspension problems Fluid leaks Worn belts or hoses 3. Helps Maintain Fuel Efficiency
A properly maintained engine runs more efficiently. Replacing filters, fluids, and worn components helps your vehicle operate smoothly and reduces unnecessary fuel consumption. For drivers commuting between Strathalbyn, Mount Barker, and surrounding areas, improved efficiency can make a noticeable difference in running costs. 4. Protects Your Vehicle’s Resale Value
When it comes time to sell or trade in your vehicle, buyers often check the service history first. A complete stamped logbook demonstrates that the car has been maintained properly and gives buyers confidence in its reliability. Vehicles with full service records typically achieve higher resale prices than those without documented servicing. How Much Does Logbook Servicing Cost? The cost of logbook servicing varies depending on: Vehicle make and model Service interval Parts required Age of the vehicle Generally, independent workshops often provide more competitive pricing than dealerships while still following manufacturer specifications. Many drivers in regional areas like Strathalbyn prefer local mechanics because they receive: Personal service Transparent pricing Flexible booking options How Often Should You Book a Logbook Service? The most reliable way to know when your vehicle is due is by checking the manufacturer’s service schedule in your logbook. However, a simple rule many mechanics recommend is Every 10,000–15,000 km or every 12 months, whichever comes first. Drivers who frequently travel longer distances across regional South Australia may need servicing more regularly due to increased wear and tear. Choosing a Reliable Workshop in Strathalbyn When selecting a workshop for logbook servicing, look for a mechanic that: Uses quality manufacturer-approved parts and fluids Clearly explains the work being completed Provides transparent pricing Has strong local reputation and reviews A trustworthy local workshop like Strathfield Motors will also keep detailed service records, ensuring your vehicle’s maintenance history is properly documented. Logbook servicing is one of the most important steps in maintaining your vehicle’s safety, performance, and long-term value. The good news for Strathalbyn motorists is that you don’t need to rely on expensive dealership servicing to protect your warranty. By choosing a qualified local mechanic who follows the manufacturer’s service schedule, you can keep your car running smoothly, reduce long-term repair costs, and maintain the full value of your vehicle...
